Maths - A Level

This course will suit students who have both a strong interest and ability in mathematics. This is a very challenging course as such students will have to be highly motivated and capable of independent study in order to be successful. The course covers a mixture of pure and applied mathematics.

This qualification is equivalent to one A Level. 

 

Course Content 

Year 12

Term 1:

  • Pure: Algebra, functions, graphs and transformations.
  • Statistics: Data collection, measures of location and spread, representation and interpretation of data.    Mechanics: Modelling                                                                                            

Term 2:

  • Pure: Straight line graphs, circles, further algebra and binomial expansion.
  • Mechanics: Modelling and constant acceleration.

Term 3:

  • Pure: Binomial expansion, trigonometry,and differentiation.                             
  • Statistics: Probability, statistical distributions and hypothesis testing.

Term 4:

  • Pure: Integration, exponentials and logarithm.
  • Mechanics: Forces and motion and variable acceleration.

Term 5:

  • Pure: vectors
  • Revision for the AS examination.

Term 6:

  • Revision for the AS examination.
  • Pure: Algebraic methods, functions and graphs and binomial theorem.
  • Mechanics: Moments.
  • Statistics: Regression, correlation and hypothesis testing.

Year 13

Term 1:

  • Pure: Radians, sequences and series.
  • Mechanics: Moments.
  • Statistics: Conditional probability.

Term 2:

  • Pure: Radians, trigonometric functions and modelling, numerical methods and parametric equations.
  • Mechanics: Projectiles.
  • Statistics: Conditional probability.

Term 3:

  • Pure: Numerical methods, parametric equations and differentiation.
  • Statistics: Normal distribution.

Term 4:

  • Pure: Integration and vectors.
  • Mechanics: Applications of forces.

Term 5:

  • Pure: Integration.
  • Mechanics: Application of forces.
  • Revision and practice papers.

Term 6:

  • Revision and final examinations.

Assessment

100% external examination (Paper 1 & 2 Pure [67%], Paper 3 Statistics and Mechanics [33%]).

Pupils are usually entered for AS Mathematics at the end of Year 12, before commencing with the Year 2 course content.

 

Progression

Studying mathematics to GCE level will open the door to careers in accountancy, finance, statistics, computer programming, engineering, medicine, psychology, architecture, dentistry and teaching among others.

In short, there is no real barrier to what you can do with Mathematics.

Entry Requirements

In order to attend Meopham Sixth Form the minimum entry requirement is 5 level 4 GCSEs, including English and Maths.

To study A Level Maths students are required to achieve a minimum of a Level 7 in GSCE Maths
