Drama Department Intent (KS4)

At Meopham it is our goal to help students to become well rounded, empathetic students who appreciate a variety of different cultures from around the world. With this in mind, students are introduced to a broad selection of different theatre styles and genres which allow them to understand how some modern theatre is formed and created. Lessons are active with students learning practical and theoretical skills. As well as being given opportunities to perform in class, in school shows and productions.

Performing Arts is an academic and creative subject and students should be aware of the commitment they need to make to their skills development across all the Performing Arts skill sets.

The BTEC Performing Arts (Acting) course is a vocational one which really plays to the strengths of our students here at Meopham.

The course focuses on three components of work being completed which is made up of the following:

  • Component 1 – Exploring the Performing Arts

  • Component 2 - Development of Skills

  • Component 3 - Responding to a Brief

This course is designed to be fun and engaging but it is important to understand that there is a significant amount of written work. Before starting this course students will need to demonstrate that they are comfortable with engaging in performance and ‘being in the spotlight’. An ability to perform in front of others and the willingness to try is essential at this level. Skills and confidence are built throughout the course but a starting foundation will lead to the most success.

As well as teaching time, students are given opportunities to enrich their theatrical lives further by engaging in a range of after school activities. We run a school Youth Theatre as well as providing opportunities to work with the Royal Shakespeare Company as an Associate School.

From Vaudeville to Verbatim, we offer a well rounded and comprehensive curriculum which pupils will enjoy and flourish within.
