Curriculum Intent
At Meopham School, we are united in our vision to create an exciting future for every individual, by instilling a culture of respect, tenacity and excellence that truly improves the lives of all those within our school community.
Our overarching principle is that we will deliver a curriculum that is ambitious for all, adhering to our TRUE values: tenacity, respect, unity and excellence.
Our mission at Meopham School is to provide our students with an excellent education through a fully inclusive and appropriately challenging curriculum that provides students with the creativity to meet the demands of an ever-changing world. We will create life-long learners by inspiring our students through outstanding lessons delivered by highly trained and qualified teachers. Through both a traditional academic curriculum at KS3 and KS4 and an ever-growing and highly-ambitious Sixth Form, students will make excellent progress and be encouraged to strive towards top-third universities, highly-sought degree apprenticeships or high-level employment.
Academic excellence is important, but we are also committed to instilling excellence in all aspects of our students’ development. We will maintain a safe and stimulating learning environment, and develop tenacious young people who can overcome any barriers to learning and have a strong sense of moral purpose. Our students will go on to make a positive difference locally, nationally and globally.

We are committed to providing an inspiring and enriching learning experience that empowers every student to reach their full potential. The key tenets of our Teaching and Learning vision are:
-
Teaching and learning strategies should be evidence-informed;
-
There should be a consistent approach to key principles for effective Teaching and Learning, but teachers should have the professional autonomy to personalise their practice based on the context of their classes;
-
Innovation and collaboration are encouraged and teachers should always be looking to develop their practice further;
-
Accountability is a responsibility we all share for achieving our ultimate moral aim, which is to provide all students with an excellent education.
-
There are four elements that all teachers have a professional duty to fulfil in relation to Teaching and Learning:
-
Plan - teachers should plan their lessons, adapted effectively for their students.
-
Teach - teachers should facilitate students leading their own learning.
-
Feedback - teachers should provide regular, purposeful feedback that students respond to in-depth.
-
Culture and Ethos - teachers should establish a calm, supportive and purposeful environment for learning through a professional adherence to the school’s behaviour for learning policy.
-
Our Key Principles:
-
Tailored Retrieval: Regular and deliberate retrieval practice across a range of topics helps identify and address misconceptions and promotes the transfer of information to long-term memory. Retrieval tasks should be based on a teacher’s understanding of the needs of their class.
-
Pace and Purpose: We only design activities that achieve learning objectives, which increase in challenge throughout the lesson, and provide the right balance of content and skill.
-
Student-Led Learning: Lessons should always contain opportunities for students to engage in independent, deliberate practice. The students’ role is to engage in challenging thinking and apply this purposefully; the teacher’s role is to facilitate this.
-
All-Access, High-Challenge: All lessons should promote higher-order thinking skills, with a scaffolded approach to ensure all students can demonstrate them. Teachers should adapt their practice in response to student misconceptions. Teachers have a duty to adhere to the agreed strategies within the SEND profiles of specific students.
-
AfL for All: Through skillful questioning, whole-class progress checks and other formative assessment techniques, our teachers gain valuable insights into student understanding and adapt their teaching accordingly. Each lesson should end with a plenary that consolidates students’ learning from the lesson.
-
Feedback that Feeds Forward: Teachers should offer timely, diagnostic feedback that allows students to make progress and develop their metacognition, creating lifelong learners. We empower students to take ownership of their learning by providing opportunities for self and peer assessment.
-
CSP (Calm, Supportive, Purposeful) Environment: We create a learning environment where students feel encouraged to take risks, celebrate successes, and learn from mistakes. Genuine praise is used to motivate and inspire.
-
Rigorous Routines: Clear and consistent routines create a structured and predictable learning environment that maximizes learning time.
-
Life LONG Skills: Students have regular opportunities to develop their literacy, oracy, numeracy and grammar. All teachers have responsibility for these four areas.
-
RAPID Progress Home Learning: All teachers will set meaningful home learning tasks, according to the agreed matrix, which support the RAPID progress principles.
