Sport

Our Mission: To inspire every student to find their place in physical education and embrace an active, healthy future.

Meopham PE Curriculum Intent: Our intent is to provide a broad, inclusive and enjoyable Physical Education curriculum that gives every student the opportunity to participate, progress and find their place within PE. Through a variety of sports and physical activities, we aim to help students discover activities they enjoy while developing their physical competence, knowledge and confidence, alongside resilience, teamwork and leadership. Positive experiences promote health and wellbeing and foster a lifelong appreciation of being active.

Our Shared Vision

Our mission and curriculum intent have been developed collaboratively by the PE team, reflecting the personal values and beliefs we each hold about the importance of Physical Education and the positive impact it can have on young people.

These shared values are at the heart of our department and shape the experiences we aim to provide for every student. They guide our curriculum, our teaching and the opportunities we provide beyond lessons, ensuring that participation, progress, enjoyment and belonging are embedded in everything we do.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, students experience a broad and varied Physical Education curriculum designed to develop physical competence, confidence, knowledge and a positive relationship with physical activity.

Across Years 7-9, students build and apply skills through a range of activities including football, netball, tag rugby and rugby, basketball, handball, volleyball, tennis and short tennis, badminton, gymnastics, orienteering, teambuilding, athletics, striking and fielding and Health, Fitness & Wellbeing.

The curriculum is sequenced so that students revisit and develop learning as they progress through the key stage.

Key Stage 4 - Core Physical Education

Core Physical Education continues throughout Key Stage 4, with a focus on participation, enjoyment, personal development and encouraging lifelong engagement in physical activity.

Students continue to experience a range of activities, with opportunities to develop confidence, teamwork, leadership and independence. In Year 11, greater choice allows students to engage in activities that reflect their interests and support continued participation beyond school.

Assessment in Physical Education - ME in PE

At Meopham, we recognise that success in Physical Education is about more than physical performance. Our ME in PE assessment approach develops and recognises students across three interconnected areas:

Physical ME - what can I do?

Thinking ME - what do I know and understand?

Social ME - how do I contribute?

This allows students to recognise progress through physical performance, knowledge and understanding, decision-making, communication, leadership, resilience and their contribution to others.

BTEC Tech Award in Sport - Key Stage 4

The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Sport is offered as an option at Key Stage 4. Students explore participation in sport and physical activity, sporting performance and officiating and fitness for sport and performance. The course combines internally assessed Pearson Set Assignments with an externally assessed component, developing practical understanding alongside knowledge that supports progression to further study and careers within sport and physical activity.

BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport - Key Stage 5

At Key Stage 5, students can continue their study of sport through BTEC National Sport. The course builds on prior learning and develops students' understanding of the sport and physical activity sector through applied and vocational learning. It supports progression to further education, higher education, apprenticeships and employment within sport and related industries.

Extra-Curricular Sport, Competition and Leadership

Our extra-curricular programme provides students with opportunities to participate, develop, compete and belong beyond their curriculum PE lessons. Throughout the year, students can take part in recreational clubs, team training, competitive sport, House events and sports leadership opportunities.

Representing Meopham School is an important part of our sporting offer. Our teams compete in the Gravesham Borough League across a variety of sports, including football, netball, rugby, cricket, tennis, badminton, indoor rowing and basketball, alongside entering the Kent Cup for football. Our competitive programme is dynamic and continues to evolve as we seek to provide more students with the opportunity to represent Meopham across an increasingly diverse range of sports.

Competition also takes place within our school community through a variety of House sporting events throughout the year. These provide opportunities for students of different abilities and interests to represent their House, participate alongside their peers and contribute to the wider sporting life of the school.

Sports Leadership is another important part of our wider PE offer. We develop students as Sports Leaders, providing opportunities for them to put their leadership skills into practice at a variety of sporting events throughout the year. Through supporting the organisation and delivery of events and working with younger participants, students develop valuable skills including communication, organisation, teamwork, confidence and responsibility.

Our programme continues to grow and evolve in response to the sporting calendar, student interest and new opportunities, as we aim to provide as many students as possible with the chance to find their place within PE and sport at Meopham.
